Buzzing Beyond Borders

Bee Education in the U.S. Virgin Islands

The island moved at its own pace. The sun was bright, the air was crisp, and the sense of community was evident from the moment we arrived. We landed with a clear mission: to educate and inspire people of all ages about the importance of bees and their vital role in our ecosystem.

Hosted at the Florence Williams Public Library, we had the privilege of presenting not one, but two educational bee programs for local residents and visitors. The events featured local island music that brought energy and culture to the experience, creating a welcoming atmosphere for learning and engagement. We were also honored to partner with local beekeeper Roniel Allembert, affectionately known as "The Honeyman," who brought live bees and shared his firsthand knowledge of beekeeping, pollination, and the important role bees play in sustaining our environment and food supply. His presentation gave attendees a unique opportunity to see bees up close, ask questions, and gain a deeper appreciation for these often misunderstood pollinators. Roniel's passion for beekeeping and commitment to educating the community made a lasting impact on everyone in attendance.

Mikaila shared her remarkable story and passion for bee advocacy, inspiring both children and adults alike. During the visit, she also connected with two young lemonade entrepreneurs, JuJu and CeCe, whose enthusiasm, creativity, and entrepreneurial spirit were truly impressive. Their interaction highlighted the power of young people supporting one another through education, business, and community involvement.

Because the U.S. Virgin Islands are known for having more aggressive Africanized bees, many residents have understandable concerns about bee encounters. One of the primary goals of these programs was to provide accurate information, encourage respectful coexistence, and replace fear with understanding. Through hands-on learning, live demonstrations, and open discussion, attendees left with a greater awareness of the essential role bees play in protecting biodiversity, supporting local agriculture, and maintaining healthy ecosystems.

Beyond the educational programs, the trip offered an opportunity to immerse ourselves in the rich history, vibrant culture, and natural beauty of the island. From the food and local traditions to the breathtaking scenery and welcoming people, every experience deepened our appreciation for the community. It was a memorable journey filled with learning, meaningful connections, and a renewed commitment to bee education, environmental stewardship, and empowering communities through knowledge.
